Representation of ethnic minorities is, by and large, based on stereotypes, particuarly sports, music and crime.

Alvardo (1987) categorised the portrayal in a number of ways:

1. The exotic - ethnic groups are seen as exotic or being 'the other' and are represented as being strange or unusual. It is assumed that the dominant reading of the audience will be from the point of view of white people, referred to as the 'white eye' (Hall 1990). 
2. The dangerous - minorities may be represented as a threat to society, such as criminals and immigrants and asylum seekers. The news and other media may present these groups as taking advantage of Britain and exposes, in some cases, an underlying institutional racisim.
3. The humourous - in the 1970s, race was a major vehicle for comedy. Programmes removed the threat of different races by making them the butt of the jokes. There is evidence of a more recent positive change.
4. The pitied - representation of ethnic groups may be as deprived groups or victims of natural disasters like famine, flood and sometimes conflicts. Images of children are often used by charities to gain sympathy.

Gender Performativity

Remember, Judith Butler's idea of gender performativity is concerned with how males and females are encouraged socially to behave in a way which is deemed appropriate for their gender. Society expects certain behavioural qualities of men and women (men are brave warriors and women are beautiful home-makers....sorry to be so reductive).
